Visions of Africa

Through this series of paintings I have attempted to create a visual ode to African textiles by exploring the diversity and beauty of patterns depicted in both modern and traditional African textiles.

Driven by the idea that the possibilities of creating different patterns is infinite,  the patterns depicted on the textiles in these paintings have been uniquely designed drawing inspiration from forms in nature as well as patterns and symbols depicted in African textiles.  The ideas for the individual patterns come to mind first, as sudden visions of colours and shapes and the painting evolves from this as a starting point, until eventually it takes on an identity of its own. The slow and entrancing process of painting repetitive patterns is conducive to a meditative mindset that allows me to reflect further on the idea of infinity in pattern designs and how the abstract concept of infinity is a truth that extends through different realms of life.

With this in mind, the paintings explore ways in which African textiles are used by African women to create beauty, celebrate life through personal adornment using textiles and jewellery and the way that they are able to participate within and connect deeply with cultural traditions in this way.
